Origins and History
The Saruk carpets originate from a knotting area located about 50 km north of Arak and 70 km west of Malayer. The name "Saruk" may derive from ancient Turkmen tribes who moved to Persia between 1000 and 1400, although in modern artifacts there are no evident direct influences.
The Rebirth of Production
- First half of the nineteenth century: the art of knotting carpets in Saruk certainly develops.
- Between 1860 and 1870: production organized for the Persian and European markets brings fame to the name.
- Product variants:
- Mahal: for average quality
- Mushkabad: for lower quality
- From 1920 to 1930: the influence of North American merchants, with the so-called American Saruk, introduces new patterns and colorings.
- Since the 1970s: there has been a return to traditional designs, maintaining first-rate technical structures.
Technical Features and Materials
Saruk carpets are renowned for their superior quality and the following features:
Knotting Techniques
- Senneh knot (Persian) with high concentration, with a density between 300,000 and 500,000 knots per square meter.
- Use of double cotton wefts, which give a particularly robust structure.
- The back is well finished, a sign of careful craftsmanship.
Materials and Coloring
- High-quality wool and special dyeing techniques.
- Dominant colors:
- Madder red (dughi), obtained with traditional processes
- Deep blue for ornamental details
- The color palette, while sharing some similarities with that of carpets such as Bijar and Heriz, features a unique shade, characteristic of Saruk.
Design and Decorative Motifs
Saruk rugs are distinguished by their refined design:
Decorative Elements
- Central medallion: often the focal point of the carpet, enriched with ornamental details.
- Elaborate borders: with traditional motifs and arabesques.
- Decorative patterns that combine floral and geometric elements.
Evolution of Design
- Over time, classic designs have become established, while during the American Saruk period new color schemes and open bouquet floral motifs were introduced.
- Today, traditional design has become predominant again, ensuring the authenticity of the artifact.
Why Choose a Saruk Carpet?
- Artisanal Quality: High knot density and impeccable finishes.
- Unique Design: Perfect balance between traditional patterns and vibrant colors.
- Long-lasting Durability: Selected materials and traditional techniques that ensure longevity.
- Investment Value: A Saruk carpet represents not only a decorative element, but also an investment in textile art.
