Nanaj Carpets: The Authenticity of Persian Tradition
The Nanaj (or Nenej) carpets come from a village located north of Malayer, a region renowned for the quality of its textile products. These carpets retain the typical characteristics of the area, with a solid structure and unmistakable coloring.
Technical Features
- Single wefts and cotton warps, which provide strength and compactness.
- Ghiordes knot with a density of about 100,000 knots per square meter, ideal for precise workmanship but not excessively rigid.
- Very shiny yarn, which enhances the brilliance of the colors.
Designs and Colors
Nanaj rugs are distinguished by their unmistakable design, similar to that of Nehavend rugs:
- Absence of a central medallion: in its place, a large flower from which geometric motifs branch out towards the edges.
- All-over decoration, with geometric elements and stylized floral motifs.
- Crab motif, of ancient origin from Herat, recurring in the composition.
- Predominantly dark coloring, with shades of red and blue dominating, alternating with light floral details.
Uniqueness and Craftsmanship
Identifying a Nanaj carpet is extremely simple, as its design is exclusive to this village. Although there are similarities with carpets from Bijar, Varamin, Tabriz, and Mashad, the knotting techniques and coloring of Nanaj are completely distinct and recognizable.
These carpets are appreciated for their combination of durability and refined aesthetics, making them ideal for both classic and modern settings.
