The Kaskai are one of the main nomadic tribes of Turcoman origin, historically settled in Fars, north and west of Shiraz. Their settlement dates back to a period between the 1400s and 1500s, although their origins are still the subject of study.
The etymology of the name Kaskai is uncertain, but it may derive from a term meaning "horses marked with white", a reference to the practice of their horsemen of marking horses with a white spot on the forehead as a good luck charm.
Like the Afshar, the Kaskai lived in Azerbaijan until the 10th century, before migrating to Fars. This movement influenced their decorative style, which shows strong similarities with Caucasian carpets, rather than those typically Persian.
After their settlement in Fars, the Kaskai came under the influence of Lori culture, which is still visible in their artifacts. Today, the tribe is organized as a political confederation, composed of several subgroups, including:
✔ Amaleh
✔ Kashkuli Kuchek
✔ Kashkuli Bozorg
✔ Farsimadan
✔ Darashuri
✔ Shishbouliuki
Their territory is largely nomadic and extends from the district of Firuzabad to Chahar Mahal.
The Kaskai tribes historically bred horses and herds for milk and wool, while the sedentarized groups cultivate cereals, fruit trees and practice agriculture. They are predominantly Shia Muslims.
Kaskai carpets are the reflection of their nomadic tradition and are distinguished by:
Commercially, all carpets from Shiraz are often mistakenly classified as Kaskai, even though there are stylistic differences with the products of the nearby Khamseh confederation.
Kaskai carpets are known for their natural vegetable coloring, obtained with traditional pigments. Among the predominant shades are:
✔ Madder red, sometimes enriched with pomegranate peels
✔ Dark yellow, with warm and earthy tones
As for the decorative motifs, the Kaskai feature a variety of patterns, including:
Kaskai carpets are among the most authentic and traditional of Persian textile art, still knotted today with techniques handed down from generation to generation.
In addition to knotted carpets, the Kaskai produce beautiful Kilims, hairless carpets characterized by vivid geometries and intense colors. Kilims are lightweight, versatile, and perfect for decor with an ethnic and traditional flavor.
✔ Authenticity and nomadic tradition, reflected in every detail
✔ Natural and intense colors, that retain their beauty over time
✔ Unique and recognizable designs, inspired by Turkmen and Caucasian culture
✔ Robust and durable quality, ideal for furnishing spaces with a classic or boho-chic style
